Environmental Newsletter | January 2025

Dear customers, partners, and friends of EEX,

We hope you had a restful holiday season to start the new year!

We’re excited to share that we closed 2024 with new records for both our European and North American environmental markets.

In Europe, EEX launched four new GO Futures products, which have already seen 4 TWh of trades since they were introduced. We also saw a record number of market participants and a 27% year-on-year increase in trading volumes for EUA derivatives.

In addition, our North American markets saw incredible growth in carbon, renewable energy certificates (RECs) and renewable fuels in the last quarter: a 239% increase in posted volume for 2024 from the previous year contributing to the overall 149% volume growth for the year. Get the detailed breakdown in our dedicated North America update below.

We value the exchanges we had with you in-person throughout 2024, whether at our webinars, roundtables, conferences, or industry gatherings. We hope to see you again soon, starting with E-World in Essen. Please reach out to us to arrange an in-person catch up at our EEX booth or join our Day 1 panel covering the nEHS transition to the EU ETS2.

We are grateful for your ongoing engagement and support for our markets and product offering. We look forward to working closely with you again this year to further build environmental markets together!

Below, you will find further details on the mentioned products and events. We hope you enjoy.

Best regards,

Steffen Köhler

    EUA Auction Calendars 2025

Last month, EEX published the 2025 auction calendars for EU allowances (EUA). From this month onwards, no dedicated auctions for aviation allowances will be held as they are now included in the EUA auctions.

MSR reductions of the 2025 auction volumes are already applied for the volumes from January to August 2025. The volumes from September to December 2025 are preliminary and subject to adjustment.

This includes information on the following:

    • Common EU Auction Platform (CAP3) auctions on behalf of 25 EU member states and the EEA EFTA states, as well as for the Innovation Fund, the Modernisation Fund, the InnoFundRRF, the MS RRF and the new Social Climate Fund
    • Auctions for Germany 2025
    • Auctions for Poland 2025
    • Auctions for the UK in respect of Northern Ireland 2025

EEX provides detailed information in the published auction calendar at this link.

The new Social Climate Fund provides EU Member States with dedicated funding so that the most affected vulnerable groups, such as households in energy or transport poverty, are directly supported, and not left behind during the green transition.

Since 2010, EEX and its clearing house ECC have successfully performed and settled more than 2,900 emissions auctions for the EU ETS
