Global Power Derivatives Newsletter | September 2026

Dear Customers, Partners and Friends,

With the start of the autumn season, we are looking forward to a busy time of the year.

Our priority is to build markets together with you and to provide platforms, where we can understand your needs and where the markets are going. This autumn won't be different and we are already looking forward to the numerous events we will host from London to Hong Kong across continents.

Talking about continents, our power derivatives markets in Europe as well as Japan continue their upward trajectory with growing volumes across the board. We are also very excited that as of 7 September, we have extended our Japan Power order book trading hours to also fully cover the APAC timezone. We really appreciate our customers and partners and always endeavour to address the local needs!

These local needs might also mean that we need to innovate our product portfolio to align with global changes. With the growth of renewables, batteries are playing a more important role than ever before. To address the need for standardisation and transparency on this market, we are extending our renewables hedging offer, in particular with the so-called TBx Power Futures, and we welcome your feedback on this upcoming new products.

Let's innovate and continue building our markets together!

Enjoy today's newsletter,

Steffen Köhler

EEX Power Derivatives - Global Market Update

Recent highlights from the EEX global power markets:

EEX's European markets continued the significant year-to-date traded volume growth for the first eight months of the year, with significant expansion on the German (+6%; 240 TWh), French (+26%), and Spanish (+28%) power derivatives markets, on a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis.

The GB and Irish power futures markets have seen strong growth in both trading activity, especially average daily trading volumes, as well as market participation in recent months. In July, Irish Power Futures reached a new monthly record in terms of traded volume, reflecting an increase of 320% YoY. In the first eight months of the year, this also meant an over 12,000% growth in traded volumes for the GB Power Futures.

The EEX Belgian power futures market has been in the focus for many European participants following the recent launch of new short-term futures, and this market grew a significant 41% YoY in total for the period January to August.

On the EEX CEE markets, Hungary remains dominant but several other markets have recorded strong growth with broader expansion of trading activity and more active participants driving up liquidity and market depth. In particular, the Romanian, Slovenian and Croatian markets have seen significant increases, while volumes increased almost threefold YoY on the Polish market (+184% YTD YoY).

For our Nordic power derivatives market, selected top of book prices from the previous day are now available through our website or seen on TradingView. Watch our H1 update video here.

The year-to-date traded volume for the overall EEX Nordic power derivatives market registered an over 900% YoY expansion thanks to the additional focus, including the opening of local offices and continued dialogue with the local market participants.

The first half year of 2026 saw continued growth on the EEX Japanese power derivatives market, celebrating the sixth anniversary. As of today, with over 151 TWh in 2026, we have already surpassed the full-year traded volume of 2025. Watch our latest update video here.

Renewable Energy Hedging at EEX

Europe's power markets are changing. The rapid growth of solar and wind generation is reshaping intraday price patterns. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming a critical source of flexibility, creating a growing need for hedging instruments that reflect battery revenues derived from energy arbitrage.

To meet these evolving risk management needs, EEX is expanding its renewable energy hedging offering from 21 September with TBx Futures.

TBx Futures were designed to provide direct exposure to the spread between high- and low-price periods., enabling BESS asset owners and operators to more effectively manage price risk and lock in future arbitrage margins.
