North Whiteley Travel Matters: Issue 9

Hampshire County Council's Travel Planning Team is delivering a Travel Plan for North Whiteley on behalf of the North Whiteley Consortium. Our focus is helping you to travel more actively and sustainably by supporting you to swap car journeys for more walking, cycling and shared transport.

Have you used your £100 Green Travel Boost?

Walking in the rain

Since we launched the £100 Green Travel Boost in July, we’ve been thrilled to see a steady stream of applications for items that will help you travel more sustainably, both locally and beyond. The most popular items so far have been walking gear like boots, trainers, and waterproof, windproof clothing, followed by bicycles and cycling accessories.

This initiative, funded by the developer, allows each household in the North Whiteley development to claim up to £100 to support sustainable travel and reduce car use.

Can you go car-free for a day?

September 22 is World Car Free Day, celebrated globally. This idea started in the 1970s and has been embraced by many cities as a chance to show how pollution impacts our lives and how much better our cities could be without relying on private cars for transport. Can you go car-free for a day? Or perhaps you could participate in a 30-day challenge organized by the climate charity Possible?

Going back to school?

Take a moment to think about how you’ll get to school this year. Many parents find the school run stressful, especially when driving. Why not explore some alternatives? In 2021/22 79% of children preferred to travel actively*, including Park and Stride, which maybe a better option for those who have to use the car. For more sustainable travel ideas, see our 'How Could You Travel to School?' booklet which also features a fun drawing competition for your child!

*Based on a Hands-up survey undertaken with STARS accredited schools.

Walktober Challenge
Find out more about the Walktober Challenge

Feeling up for a challenge? Why not join us in celebrating Walktober this October!
It’s a month-long challenge for International Walk to School Month. You can walk or wheel just one journey a day to or from school, or maybe park a bit further away and walk or wheel the remaining part of the journey. Remember, change doesn’t have to be all or nothing – it’s the small steps that count.

Changes to your 28/28A service

Minor changes to services 28/28A took effect on 1 July 2024. First Solent, supported by the North Whiteley Development Consortium and Hampshire County Council, continues to provide the service. Most users saw no change, but some peak time journeys on weekdays were revised.

The timetable was changed to allow pupils of Cornerstone C of E Primary School to arrive at 0840, and journeys to and from Botley Station were withdrawn due to low passenger numbers. The new timetable is available on the First Solent website. You can still take advantage of the £2 bus fare cap until 31 December 2024.
